Happy April, ScribbleFriends!

I’ve been helping Mrs. Scribbly in her garden this week and I’ve learned a lot about plants. Did you know that there are more than 300,000 different kinds of plants that have been identified and named in the world? And scientists think there are easily more than a million additional plants out there yet to be found and named! Wow! That could take a while.

Mrs. Scribbly had us start by taking some weeds out of her garden. I had a hard time telling what was a plant and what was a weed. Some of them looked really pretty and had flowers, but Mrs. Scribbly would say, “That weed has got to go!” I asked her what the difference was between a plant and a weed. She told me all weeds are plants, but they become a weed when they grow somewhere you don’t want them to be. So if a rose starts growing in the middle of your cornfield (or if corn starts growing in your rose garden) it officially becomes a weed.

Next, we dug holes and planted some flowers in her yard. I asked her what the difference was between a plant and a flower. All flowers are plants, but not all plants have flowers. Most plants, about 85%, are flowering plants. It’s pretty great to have someone like Mrs. Scribbly who knows so much about plants living right next door. I’m a lucky monster.
