May Fun

Happy May, ScribbleFriends!

Did you know that the average American child spends more time in front of a screen than any other activity (besides sleeping) each year? We spend more time in front of a TV than we do in school! Did you also know that research has shown our brains turn-off when we’re watching TV? Regardless of what kind of program we’re watching, our brain activity is similar to the brain waves produced when staring at a blank wall. Sure, screens are a part of our lives (you’re looking at one now), but all things in moderation, my friends. This year, Screen-Free Week takes place May 6th thru May 12. It’s a time for discovering all the great things there are to do when we’re not glued to a screen. My friends and I have made a list of all the things we’re going to do instead of surfing the net, playing video games, and watching TV:

  • Read books
  • Make sock puppets
  • Draw pictures
  • Play baseball
  • Bake cookies
  • Ride our bikes
  • Sing songs
  • Write stories

Remember, if you must watch a television show, be sure to watch Wimee’s Words on PBS! What do you like to do when the screens are off? Can you last a week without screens?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

ScribbleMonster’s Special Guest of the Month is…

me zombified by the television screen! Have you ever sat in front of the television and watched show after show? It’s pretty easy to spend your whole day watching television if you let yourself. But I control the TV now, the TV doesn’t control me! Does the TV control you?

You can print out this coloring page and make your own TV Zombie ScribbleMonster. Who will be my next Special Mystery Guest? Check back in June to see!
